Best Selfie Drones Comparison Chart 2017
Why I did not include the 7 Hawk4K Folding Drone?
Give the similarity in looks of the 7 Hawk4K with the DJI Mavic Pro and both of them claiming to provide 4k video, you must be surprised why I chose the DJI Mavic Pro and yet conveniently ignored the 7 Hawk4k.
As a drone expert, I can assure you, these two products might share come similarity in terms of features and looks but when it comes to actual performance they are leagues apart. 7Hawk4K simply isn’t the best choice if you wish to have a smooth and easy operation panel. On top of that, the drone has got serious issues with the sturdiness of the various parts, especially the gimbal. You will definitely not like to receive a product that can break down with minor mistakes. The 7 Hawk4K is a promising product, but it needs to get overhauled to a large extent to even consider this as class.
JJRC H37 ELFIE 480p HD Pocket – Beginners Best Budget Choice
If you have just decided to start using a selfie drone and want something that will be easy to use as well as affordable, there is nothing better than the JJRC H37 ELFIE.
The Elfie is so small and compact that it is actually smaller than your iPhone and can fit your palm. Weighing just 73g, it is among the lightest selfie drones we have listed today. You will not require any FAA registration to get this into air since the weight is so less.
As for the flight time, it is variable between 8 minutes and 15 minutes (you will find the product description mentioning 7 minutes of flight time). I can tell that I received a good 10 minutes of flight time myself. As for how far the drone can fly, there are a few dissimilarities about the exact distance, but my experience with the product allows me to guarantee at least about 50 meters of height, and that is pretty decent for the price tag. The other features like altitude hold to maintain a hovering altitude once it comes on, headless mode to make it go forward and backward as per the position of the controller and roll over mode to get a complete 360 degree shot are perfect for drone user.
All in all, the Elfie is what you should get if you are just starting to use a drone for the first time. It is cheap, affordable and easy to use. It has the perfect portable size, thanks to the foldable arms and does not require any FAA authorization. It is WiFi controlled. The image and video quality is pretty decent at 480p and you get virtually real-time feed on your Smartphone. The control application can be downloaded on iPhone or Android. It allows the drone to save photos and videos directly to the mobile memory, thus not requiring any on-device storage facility. And, if you do crash, which most of you will, there is not much physical damage or monetary loss that you are going to face.
What I did not like?
There is no control to allow the drone to sense when it is going to land and thus landing on a palm is strictly not advisable. Also, without GPS the drone kind of hovers at an altitude and cannot maintain a fixed location lock.
- Foldable compact design, can fit into palm
- Headless control that allows the selfie drone to be controlled in respect to the position of the operator
- WiFi FPV provides real-time footage to the operator on ground
- 3D roll allows 360 degree video by rolling the drone midair
- Altitude hold mode allows the drone at a given altitude while performing other maneuvers
If you were looking for a Chinese selfie drone for your first time use and wish to keep it within affordable budget, there is nothing better than the JJRC H37 Elfie.
You can get it on Amazon or GearBest in Black or in Pink color variations.
EACHINE E50 QuadcopterSelfie Pocket Drone – Low Budget High-Seller
EACHINE E50 selfie pocket drone is another extremely low priced product and perfect for first time selfie drone users. It is slightly costlier than the Elfie, but certainly has its fan base (apparently the reason why it is surpasses the sale of the Elfie on Amazon).
A look at it, and you might feel like it is the same product as the previous one. The design certainly is very similar, and so are the features. At 76 grams you will not even feel that there is any difference with the Elfie. It also makes it exempted from getting FAA registration for flight. The average range of flight control is about 40 meters as per the information provided and while testing I found it to be pretty accurate.
Actually you might even be able to get a few meters more depending upon the mobile device, I suppose. The Smartphone app is available for free of cost for both iPhone and Android devices. One of the better features is the camera quality and camera control. The Eachine drone comes with a 720p camera that gives wonderful picture quality given the price range. Also, you get to control the angle of the camera using the app. Besides these, there are the functions of holding altitude, headless movement allowing movement in respect to the operator position, 3D flips and real-time video streaming to the mobile control device.
Overall, this is an extremely cheap drone and perfect for those who have just started flying one. This Chinese selfie drone can suit all the basic needs and requirements, unless you are planning on professional usage. It is also very light weight and can fit into your pocket easily. The controls are very simple and easy to use. And, since most beginners crash their drone, this one is always a better choice because of the low price and lower chances of sustaining major damage due to average speed coupled with light weight. As a beginner, I must say that this is among the best choices you have got.
What I did not like?
I would have loved if it had the GPS functionality included. That would have made the drone even more stable and resulted in even better photography.
- Foldable design with arms that can be folded within
- Altitude hold mode allows the drone to hover at any given altitude within range
- 720p video recording with camera mobility
- Headless maneuver means movement directed with respect to controller
- 3D roll allows complete 360 degree recording
- WiFi FPV for real time video streaming to mobile device
Personally, I believe the Eachine drone is great investment for anyone who is trying to find the best selfie drone for the very first time. It is cheap but not lacking many functions. It is easy to control and will give anyone the hang of flying a drone using a Smartphone. The user interface of the control program is so easy to understand that there is practically no need of separate instruction manual. The drone can be used by both Android and iOS users. It has a pretty decent picture capturing capability and the image and video quality is low quality HD, which I found really impressive, unless you are planning on professional use. And, most importantly, since the Eachine drone is very low priced, even if you crash it, which most first time users do, there is no chance of any significant loss or damage.
Also, you need not worry about all the FAA registration issues as this is extremely light and will even fit into your pocket. The only point of content between the Eachine and Elfie is the price difference and I will leave that onto you to decide which one you wish to invest in as your first selfie drone.
ZeroTech Dobby 13MP HD Mini –Pro Pocket Selfie Drone
The number 3 on my list of best selfie drones is one of my personally favorite drones, the Zerotech Dobby. As should be clear from the name itself, it is a mini selfie drone and has a 13MP HD camera. Let me tell you, Dobby has a really impressive camera attached to it. It offers 4K video in 1080p resolution along with software based image stabilization that does a fantastic job.
This mini drone was launched towards the end of 2016 and within 6 months of its launch it has become one of the favorites among mini selfie drone users. From the look to performance, Dobby is a sweet little selfie drone that you are simply going to love. It has an elegant and compact design that allows you to easily carry it anywhere you wish to without a problem. The charging unit and data cable have that Apple kind of finish making it absolute favorite especially among iPhone users.
Dobby is perfect for those who wish to upgrade from their first low cost drone and get some more action out of it. The drone’s control user interface can be downloaded on both Android and iOS and the manufacturer keep updating the app with new features and functionalities. This has kept the Dobby users interested and have created a fan base for this cute one. At just 199 grams the drone is wonderfully convenient to carry around. It also does not require any FAA registration. You can use it conveniently both indoors and outdoors, thanks to the double satellite connectivity, onboard GPS and enough sensors allowing it to judge its surroundings.
What I did not like?
For a selfie drone this perfect and with so many features along with a decently good price tag I was expecting a better battery life and an extra piece of battery. However, 8 minutes of flying time is just not really high. You will do good to get yourself a spare battery when you are going out with this.
- Controllable by both Android and iOS Smartphone
- Maneuver includes orbit mode, and follow mode based on person lock or facial recognition
- Real time video streaming to device and one touch saving of videos and photos on device
- GPS sensor allows return to home feature in case of losing signal or connectivity with mobile device
- Range is about 50 meters from controlling device
- Proximity sensors allow turning off of the motors right before landing
- 13MP HD camera with 4K video, 1080p resolution, and software based image stabilization
Even with the minor drawbacks, I would say Dobby is a sure winner in the midrange selfie drone segment. It is easy to use, simple, requires no official hassles, and does a great job. You can easily have it in your family outing or while chilling out with friends and capturing memorable moments.
Yuneec Breeze 4K UHD Compact Smart Drone–Mid-Range Budget Smart Choice
Some of you might not have heard of this yet, but the reason I included the Yuneec Breeze 4K smart drone is because I really loves the user interface of the app and I always try to give you information about the best products in the market, irrespective of how much popular that product is right at the moment. The user interface is being developed regularly and updated.
The YuneecBreeze selfie drone offers really great quality videos and pictures, that I have tested myself. You will find kind of a mixed review about this one, though. I would say, it is mostly because the people are trying to compare this with the DJI Phantom or Mavic Pro.
Let me tell you, those drones are in a different league altogether while the Yuneec Breeze is targeted mostly towards those who like to have a near professional quality output at cheaper price. This drone does that job quite brilliantly. Another issue has been with the WiFi. I have found people complaining a lot about the WiFi getting disconnected. Let me clear this up:
The WiFi zone is created by the drone itself. Your mobile needs to connect to that WiFi signal. You do not need internet connectivity or cellular network for that. So, if you are facing WiFi issues, maybe you should check if your mobile device is facing any interference.
The first thing you will notice on unpacking is that it has a smart professional look. However, there is one difference from all the drones we have talked about till now; the legs containing the rotors are not foldable. So, you will need a little extra space to carry it. There is, however, special fitting to ensure that the moving blades do not come in contact with any surface. So, you can easily get the drone flying both indoors and outdoors. Another great inclusion is two batteries. This will make your life a lot easier. The drone will last about 8 to 10 minutes on a single fully charged battery. There are sensors on the bottom that allows the drone to know when it is about to land and control the speed accordingly.
The camera does a wonderful job of shooting high quality images and videos. The adjustable camera makes it possible to change the angle of the shot. The software based image stabilization gives a really good result. The follow me and orbit modes works like a charm. I loved the journey mode, though. It allows me to capture a video of the area I am standing in as the drone slowly moves away from me. The video looks astounding. On-board GPS allows return to home functionality. However, the amazing thing about this drone is that you can actually fly it as high as 200 feet. That is a lot for a selfie drone and the maximum among all the ones we have talked about till now. Weighing 3.3 pounds, it is very light, but you will need FAA registration.
What I did not like?
With so many exceptional features, Yuneec should have tried to include obstacle avoidance system too. That would have made the drone perfect. With such huge flight range, avoiding obstacles just through manual control becomes difficult.
- 4K HD video and 13MP high quality stills
- Easy to use Android and iOSmobile app for novice flyers too
- Fly safe both indoors and outdoors
- Portable and light weight, just 199 grams (needs FAA registration)
- Long distance flight, up to 200 feet
- On-board GPS for better control and return to home function
- Multiple flight modes include orbit, follow me, selfie, pilot, and journey (new modes might be included in future through software update by manufacturer)
- Photos and videos saved directly to Smartphone
- Landing gear, landing sensor and propeller guard for safe flight and landing
If you do not mind the propeller hands sticking out from sides, I would say this is a great drone for your hobby usage. It will need you to get FAA certification, but you can have loads of fun with this one and without investing a fortune in it. The camera quality is really impressive and you can easily shoot great quality videos for your YouTube channel or for sharing on Social Networks.
Xiro Xplorer 1080p 3-Axis Gimbal Quadcopter UAV Drone – Best Budget Mechanical Control
The next one, numbe 5 on this list is the XiroXplorer UAV drone. Among all the products I have been talking about till now, this one weight the most. It has a weight of 10 pounds and will need FAA registration for you to use this. However, the reason I have included the Xplorer in the list is because of the camera. A 1080p HD camera gimbal with 3-axis movement is hard to come by at a price range this cheap. That excuses the slightly more weight than the rest. Also, you get a remote control too!
You will get on-board GPS as well as 2.4GHz WiFi range extender giving you superior control over the drone from the smartphone. The flight range is up to 500meters which I will say is a really great distance. You will hardly ever want to take selfies from that far away. Multiple flight modes allow you to shoot all sorts of videos like following you or any other object you are viewing on screen. There is the return to home function that becomes active even in case of low battery.
The device can be controlled with both Android and iOS applications. It provides real time video streaming to your Smartphone. However, this is one feature that I found to be having a little issue with excessive distance. I believe this will vary as per the quality of the Smartphone and the type of interference you are getting at the time of flying the drone. However, the flight time is really impressive. It says 25 minutes of flight time on the manual. On my trial I could get a decent 20minutes before it returned back due to low battery. Now, it can be because I was testing the top speed and pushing the limits to find out how far it can go. I believe normal usage will get you better flight time.
What I did not like?
With so many features and such high controlling range I find it really odd why the manufacturers ignore the collision avoidance system. That is a must have. Also, I ordered the one that comes with spare battery and power bank. Make sure you follow my link to get that product because the extra battery and power bank is not included by default. And, please be careful with the gimbal. It is not too sturdy.
- Easy to fly features and simple user control interface even for novice users
- High quality video and image capture with 14MP HD camera
- Gimbal offering precision 3-axis movement of camera
- Multiple flight modes with follow me and follow a target features
- Return to home in case of signal loss or low battery
- High flight time, close to 25 minutes
- Real time picture and video streaming to Smartphone
- 500 meter control range and 8m/s top speed
At the price range, XIRO Explorer is a great investment. However, I will not suggest this one for the novice users. It will also need FAA certification. Use this only when you are quite apt at using mini selfie drones. For low budget professional usage, this one can be a really good option.
Xiro Xplorer Mini Quadcopter Drone – Mid-Range Best Buy
The XiroXplorer Mini is the later version of the XiroXplorer we just talked about. Even though you will find that the price is somewhat higher than the original Xplorer, the Xplorer Mini fits snugly into a compact design. I love the look of it. However, this is something you will like to fly after you have tried out some cheaper and other miniature selfie drones. This one has a larger footprint and you will have to be a bit more experienced to control this. Also, at 432 grams, this one requires you to have FAA certification.
The XiroXplorer Mini comes with a HD 13MP camera that can capture high definition images and shoot 1080p videos. However, there is no gimbal stabilization. The images and videos are software stabilized. The software does a really great job. There is GPS/GLONASS dual satellite positioning system that will ensure your drone have better control and safety. The drone is controlled using Android or iOSapplication supplied by the manufacturer. The application is updated regularly and the firmware of the drone can also be updated accordingly.
The flight time is 15 minutes, really great for a device of its size and price range. Moreover, you get an extra battery to keep your drone going.
What I did not like?
I have to remain in control to ensure collision avoidance. That is something these drone makers should start considering, even for a mid-budget drone.
- Foldable compact design
- Light weight, just 432 grams
- Dual satellite positioning GPS/GLONASS for more accuracy and higher safety
- Real time video feedback to the Smartphone
- One touch share on social media from mobile application
- Mobile app for both Android and iOS
- 13MP HD camera with software based image stabilization
- Multiple flight modes like follow me and orbit
- Intelligent Orientation Control (IOC) for effortless flying irrespective of the direction the drone is facing
XiroXplorer Mini is what I will opt for with a medium budget in mind. It does the job quite exceptionally and has a great battery life too. That is an added advantage. Also, I get an extra battery, just in case.
DJI Mavic Pro – Top Seller Best Selfie Drone 2017
I guess I need not tell you this, but I have been saving the best one for the last. The DJI Mavic Pro is my personal favorite among all the drones that I have listed till now. It is currently among the highest selling selfie drones in the world and has outsold the GoPro Karma within a very short time and Karma had no response to this.
The Mavic Pro comes with its own controller that fits snugly over your Smartphone, offering the best drone flying experience. Not only that, there are tons of other features and technologies packed under the hood. It also has 4K video and 4 miles range. Besides, it has a max flight time of 27 minutes. These are huge figures and almost impossible to beat in the current market at the price range the Mavic Pro is available.
The DJI Mavic Pro is so exceptional that if I start writing all about the features you are going to get with this, I will probably make this blog double of what it is right now. But, in short, as an expert with selfie drones, let me tell you, the DJI Mavic Pro is the best buy and top pick among all the selfie drones in 2017. You simply cannot go wrong with this choice. The Mavic Pro is so good that even professionals are not bothering to get any other high range professional drones and relying on the Mavic Pro for their work.
The first thing that the Mavic Pro has, that none of the drones above didn’t, is the odstacle avoidance system. It avoids almost anything in its path. When you are flying a drone 4 miles out, you will need the drone to save itself from anything in the path. It actually comes to a halt and hovers if there is some obstacle. Besides that, there are in total 21 sensors all over the drone to help it with all sorts of things. The GPS allows it t come back to origin. And, you can also halt the drone midair with the pause button.
The drone controller is my favorite. It feels like a PlayStation controller and has got the joystick to control flight direction as well as dual antenna for better connectivity. The interface is smarter than anything I have ever seen.
The Mavic Pro also has another great feature. It has a gimbal stabilized high definition camera. This is fantastic for every purpose.
What I did not like?
There is hardly anything not to like about the DJI Mavic Pro and that is the reason it is the bestselling drone in the world. However, if there is one thing I must mention I would say that the gimbal should be sturdier. But, DJI found a way around and offers a camera guard to save it.
- Compact foldable design that folds down to the size of a water bottle
- OcuSync Transmission System with high range coverage up to 4.3 miles (7 kilometers)
- 27 minutes flight time and 40 mph max flight speed
- Mechanically stabilized true 4K professional grade video
- Active tracking and dual satellite positioning system
- Obstacle avoidance system included with sensor redundancy to ensure maximum safety
I will call the DJI Mavic Pro the Selfie Drone of the Year 2017. It is the best selfie drone available and if budget is no constraint, get it today! There is no way you can go wrong with this choice. For beginners, though, try to get your flight right with some other options. Even with obstacle avoidance, I wouldn’t be surprised if you hurl it towards a wall at full speed and it actually crashes. After all, automated system can do as much!
There are many who complain about bad quality products while shopping online. It is mostly because the right supplier is often not selected due to a number of reasons. I take special care to offer you the links to the best supplier of every product. Use them when you are going to buy your selfie drone. While there are other drones available, there is simply nothing better than the ones I have mentioned within those budgets.
